Erin Brecheen attends Seminole Community College and is in the Physical Therapy Assistant program. She
has earned 11 credits and needs 40 to graduate. She is a 26 year old Lake County resident. She was a
caregiver to her mother and two grandmothers during their battles with terminal cancer.
She has also been a horseback riding instructor for children with disabilities for three years and she spend six
years teaching various types of dance.
According to one of her referral sources, Erin is the oldest of 5 children and delayed her education to care for
her mother who passed away in 2001 and then her maternal and paternal grandmother who also died of cancer
shortly after. After her mother passed away, Erin also became the primary caregiver to her 4 younger brothers,
including the youngest who has Downs Syndrome. Erin is currently a volunteer at the patient rehabilitation
department of the National Training Center in Clermont and holds a 3.6 GPA.

Emily Self attends Seminole Community College and is in the Advanced Technical Medical Coding and Billing
program. She has earned 24 credits and needs 15 more. She is mother of 2 boys ages 2 and 9 and has
recently separated from her husband. She is a former battered spouse, a single mother and also takes care of
her disabled mother.
She was a medical surrogate for her grandparents before they passed away and always knew she wanted to be
in health care some way. She would also like to continue her education and possibly obtain a AS Degree in
Health and Information Management, which would require taking 9 additional classes.
The main reason Emily returned to school was because she was working two jobs and still could not afford to
provide for her family. Emily's wants to see her children do well in school and has seen her son's grades
improve since she has returned to school. He would not allow her to show him up. Emily knows what a positive
impact her education will have on her future and her family both financially and emotionally.
